Not necessarily. If a bank or finance company is holding the title to your car, and if the car is worth more than you owe, the dealer can arrange to pay off your loan and give you the balance of the cash from the sale (if there is any)

=== by pink slip do you mean TITLE ???? and yes you must have the title to a vehicle. boat, or mobile home, or a trailer of any description in order to legally prove that you are the owner and to convey that title to the buyer for proper registration .... IF YOU are trying to sell your passed on grandfathers' old car and you do not have a title then you will need to file for a lost title and go before a judge and show papers that you did have inheritance of or rights to ownership of the car... you cannot sell someone elses vehicle == regardless of how`right it seems to you it is not legal

If you have the title, you just need to take it with you when you go to sell the car. The dealer will show you where and what to sign.
